Friday 10th January 2020.
I’ve always thought January is a tough month. In fact It’s probably my least favourite of the year. Work beckons after a much-earned December break and people are still recovering from the financial strain that Christmas inevitably brings (especially if you’re from a big family). But it’s not all doom and gloom. There are small moments of pleasure to be had, you just have to look a little harder than in December when everyone and everything is bold, bright and crying out for attention. The crisp, creamy pages of a new diary or the first sighting of a perfectly formed snowdrop, to name just a couple of the New Years charms.
The diet/health industry is a cutthroat one. They see the beginning of the year - when a lot of people don’t feel great about themselves - as an opportunity to bombard us with advertisements encouraging us to “make positive changes”. The most common being eating healthier, going to the gym more often, and giving up the booze. Now of course these are things to be encouraged, but if, like so many of us, you’re struggling to do that in the midst of Winter and you fall off the bandwagon a few times, or completely, don’t beat yourself up over it.
Some folks work through the cooler months to get their bodies “beach ready” for the summer, but I myself think it makes more sense to do it the other way around and give yourself a bit of a break when the days are dark and there is frost on the ground. Whenever you decide to begin making these changes, there are already copious amounts of pressure put on us in our everyday lives. Don’t let your mental health suffer because you didn’t go for that swim before work this morning, or because you had carbs for dinner last night. Life is too short for that.
I wish anyone who may be reading this a healthy and happy 2020. May the food you eat be more delicious than ever before.
Alex.
